Monaè's Story:
When I first decided to become a freelance hairstylist, I had big dreams of becoming a celebrity hairstylist. I had just graduated college, so I thought I knew it all and had everything I needed to succeed. Who cares that I lived in a small city (i.e., non-major market) and didn’t know anyone in the entertainment industry.
I quickly learned that:
* I didn’t know how to coordinate my own photoshoots to get the images I needed to promote my talent.
* I didn’t have access to celebrity hairstylists to ask questions about this career path.
* I didn’t even have any idea who the people were who hired hairstylists.
I fell flat on my face and had to go back into the salon. That’s when I decided to get out of my own way! I worked hard and learned how to break into the industry. I began to network and partner with other creatives to produce photoshoots of our work and took advanced hairstyling courses — all of which helped to improve my hairstyling skills. Plus, I learned how to reach out to the people who hired hairstylists, so I could get celebrity gigs.
When I was better prepared, I was able to leave the salon and pursue my dreams. Along the way, I thought about my early challenges and knew I needed to help others. So, if you are ready to get out of your own way, I’m here to help!
